Carson boys split at Tarkanian Classic leads prep sports roundup

LAS VEGAS — Asa Carter scored 17 points and Tez Allen added 12 to lead Carson High to a 52-47 win over Tamanawis-British Columbia Friday afternoon in a consolation bracket game at the Jerry Tarkanian Classic at Desert Oasis High School.

Carson came back later in the day and dropped a 59-47 decision to state champ Desert Vista-Arizona in a game at Faith Lutheran.

Carson is 8-4 on the year and plays today at 2:20 p.m.

Carson went on a 10-0 run against Tamanawis, but the eventual losers took the lead at the half, outscoring Carson 27-14 en route to a 27-24 lead. Carter and Allen carried the load offensively with eight each and Jayden DeJoseph scored all six of his points in the first 16 minutes.

Tamanawis led most of the second half until the Senators went ahead with about four minutes left in the game, and unlike a couple of times earlier in the season, CHS held on for the win.

“We finally finished a game,” CHS coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “We played great down the stretch; did the things we needed to do.”

Jayden DeJoseph scored 11 of his team-high 15 in the first half against Desert Vista, as the Senators trailed by one, 26-25, at the half. Carson opened the game with a 10-0 run, but DV answered back with a 12-0 run of its own.

Midway through the second half, Desert Vista went on a lengthy run, and the Senators didn’t recover.

“We didn’t answer back,” Mendeguia said. “We cracked. We didn’t deal with the adversity very well.”

Carter finished with 14, 12 of those in the second half. Allen scored eight and Jace Keema contributed six.

Douglas hammers Raiders

SPARKS — The Douglas Tigers moved into first-place in the Sierra League with an important win against Reed in Sparks.

Douglas (4-3 overall, 3-0 league) leads Bishop Manogue by one-half game. Reed dropped to 4-6 overall (1-2 High Desert League).

The Tigers host Reno in another Northern Division I crossover game today at 1:30 p.m. Reno is coming off a 56-53 win over Galena on Friday.

Fernley stops Dayton

DAYTON — The Vaqueros rolled to a 33-10 halftime lead and never looked back en route to a 57-40 Northern Division I victory.

“We came out and played very tentative,” assistant coach Kevin Ply said. “The youth of the team caught up to us. Coach (Jason) Santos told the team to relax in the second half and fly around out there. The second half was much better.”

Dayton outscored Fernley 30-24 in the final two periods.

Josh Riders led Dayton with 26, including 7-for-9 from 3-point range.

Muckers lose at home

VIRGINIA CITY — Redding Christian outlasted Virginia City, 56, 42, Thursday night in a nonleague game.

Tristan Steele led VC with 12 and Brandon Miller added eight.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CHS girls triumph

RENO — Ivy Pembrook scored 16 points to lead the Senators to an easy 62-20 win over Hug in a Division I crossover game Friday night.

The win improved Carson to 1-2 in league. The Senators visit Spanish Springs today at 11:45 a.m.

“The kids played a great game,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We played aggressive defense.”

Bri Alvarado and Josie Share added eight points each.

Reed outlasts Tigers

SPARKS — Douglas stayed close, but remained winless in league in a Northern Division I crossover loss at Reed.

Reed (2-2 overall and league) took an 18-14 first quarter lead and 30-28 at halftime on its way to winning a matchup of rivals that both advanced to the region tournament semifinals last season.

Douglas (1-6 overall, 0-3 league) hosts undefeated Reno today at 11:45 a.m.

JV BASKETBALL

Carson girls win big

RENO — Blanca Sosa scored 12 points and Camiell Simpson and Katelyn Morse added 11 each to lead the Senators to a 54-14 victory on Friday.

Carson returns to action today at 10 a.m. at Spanish Springs.

Fernley trounces Dayton

DAYTON — Fernley knocked off the Dust Devils In a Northern Division 1-A game, 47-10.

Mackenzie Montero led Dayton with five points.

Hug no match for Senators

Derek Barry scored 15 points and Dawson Lamb added 12 to lead Carson to a 64-19 win over the Hawks Friday.

Wyatt Rooker contributed eight points. Carson is now 3-4.
