Prep roundup: Senators lose thriller in 2 overtimes

LAS VEGAS — Carson High’s boys basketball team concluded the Jerry Tarkanian Classic with a 63-58 double-overtime loss to Timpanogos-Utah Saturday at Desert Oasis High School.

The Senators finished the tournament and their preseason schedule with an 8-5 record. Carson goes back to league play on Dec. 29 against Reed, and follows that up with a Dec. 30 game against Reno.

Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia was disappointed with the 1-3 record, but realistic at the same time.

“You always want to do better,” he said. “At the same time, it’s real tough competition down here. No way did I think we’d go 4-0. Any win here is pretty big, Every game is big and has playoff atmosphere. You have to bring your A game.”

This one was won at the line. Carson had a 24-19 edge in field goals, while Timpanogos hit 19 of 26 from the line compared to 8 of 15 for CHS.

The game was tied at 51 in regulation and at 54 after the first overtime. Carson led by eight with under five minutes left, but was unable to finish.

“Lack of execution,” Mendeguia said, explaining the fourth-quarter slide.

Tez Allen led Carson with 18 points followed by Asa Carter and Jayden DeJoseph with 12 each. Kyle Krebs and Jace Keema added eight points each.

Mendeguia said his team will take a couple of days off before resuming practice in preparation for its first two league games of the season against Reed and Reno next week.

Reno nips Tigers

MINDEN — Reno scored 10 unanswered points over a span of 64 seconds late in the second quarter to take a lead it never relinquished en route to a 59-53 victory against Douglas Saturday afternoon.

Reno (6-4, 3-0) led by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter and then held off a late comeback by the Tigers in a matchup between High Desert and Sierra league leaders.

Karn Goraya scored a game-high 15 points for the Huskies, including four key free throws in the final minute after Douglas pulled to within three points. Drew Rippingham also scored nine, including a pair of 3-pointers during a run when the Huskies turned a 25-24 deficit into a 34-25 lead with 2:06 left in the second quarter.

Douglas (4-4 overall, 3-1 Sierra League) was led by Jace Hart with 11 points, five of which came in the final 1:37. Michael ohnson added nine points and Tanner Williams five assists for the Tigers.

Bishop Manogue (2-0), Carson (2-0), Douglas (3-1) and Galena (3-2) are out front in what promises to be a highly competitive Sierra League playoff race.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CHS girls rally for win

SPARKS — Carson stretched its win streak to two with a 42-36 come-from-behind win over Spanish Springs Saturday morning in a Division I crossover game.

The win evened Carson’s league record at 2-2 and the team is 3-4 overall.

Carson trailed 18-5 after one, but outscored the Cougars 37-18 over the final three quarters.

“It was a hard fought game,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We came out and shut them down (after the first quarter). Our defense did a good job.”

Bri Alvarado led Carson with 23 points, 13 coming in the second half. Andrea Maffei and Ivy Pembrook scored six apiece.

The win gives CHS some nice momentum going into the Tracy Tournament on Dec. 26.

Fernley subdues Dayton

DAYTON — Despite early foul trouble, Angela Sikora scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds in a 44-23 loss to Fernley Friday night.

“It was a tough loss, but we are going to take away what we did well and go into or next game prepared offensively, and get more girls involved,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “Foul trouble took Sikora out of the game early, but I didn’t see anyone step up other than Elora (Neep) to take shots or attack the baske, When we are all shooting is when we see great things happen.”

Neep scored three points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Reno routs Douglas

MINDEN — Daranda Hinkey, Mallory McGwire and Mikayla Shults combined to score 41 points Saturday for undefeated Reno in its 67-47 Northern Division I crossover win against Douglas.

Hinkey had 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and 6-foot-4 McGwire added 14 for Reno (9-0 overall, 3-0 High Desert League). The Huskies led 20-11 after one quarter and 39-22 at halftime.

Maddy Lowe led all scorers with 17 points for Douglas (1-7 overall, 0-4 league). Freshman Janae Blue Horse added eight.

JV BASKETBALL

Carson girls win

SPARKS — Camiell Simpson scored 26 points to lad Carson to a 38-25 win over Spanish Springs on Saturday.

Carson is off until after Christmas when it plays in the State Farm Classic.

JV WRESTLING

McDermott, Case win titles

RENO — Kellen McDermott won the 145-pound title and Jesse Case took the 170-pound crown at the North Valleys JV Tournament on Saturday.

Ethan Lepire went 3-1 with two pins en route to a second-place finish at 120, Jake Roman went 2-1 and took third at 138 and John Rowe was 3-1 with three pins and took third.

CHS boys win

SPARKS — The Senators evened their overall record at 4-4 after a 65-50 win on Saturday.

Derek Barry led the way with 20 followed by Dawson Lamb with 10. Kyle Glanzmann followed with eight, while Trent Robison and Jonny Randall added seven each.
