Nevada jobless rate at 6.2 percent for November; Carson City at 6.8%

Nevada’s unemployment rate for November was 6.2 percent, basically unchanged from October, while the seasonally adjusted rate was at 6.5 percent.

The raw rate was at 6.3 percent in Las Vegas but just 5.7 percent in the Reno-Sparks reporting area.

The seasonally adjusted rate is shifted a bit by seasonal layoffs in industries such as construction.

Carson City remains a bit higher than the other metropolitan areas at 6.8 percent. Of the 24,900 in the capital’s labor force, just 1,700 were jobless as of the end of the month.

Statewide, the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports 89,200 jobless in the state out of 1.43 million workers. Chief Economist Bill Anderson said Nevada has added 30,900 jobs over the past year, a growth rate of 2.5 percent. The biggest part of that increase is the 13,200 jobs added in the Leisure and hospitality sector. That was followed by construction which grew by 12.3 percent, adding 7,800 jobs.

Churchill County reported 6.7 percent of the workforce seeking employment. That translates to 710 jobless out of 10,562.

Douglas County was at 6.3 percent jobless — 1,406 out of 22,437 in the workforce.

Lyon County still was struggling at 8.6 percent unemployment — 1,847 out of 21,399.

With 12,869 looking for work out of 227,854 workers, Washoe County has been below the 6 percent mark for three months now.

Elko remained the lowest in unemployment at just 4.9 percent. That total, however, is a bit higher than the 4.7 percent jobless the county reported in October. DETR reports just 1,318 looking for work out of 27,101 workers there.
