1918 - 2015



Glen Edward Martin, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great- grandfather, died on December 17, 2015 at 97. He was born in May 1918 in Council Bluffs, Iowa where he attended public schools and graduated from Abraham

Lincoln High School in 1937. He received a BA in Economics from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1941 and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California in 1984. He was blessed to have 4 careers in his lifetime, first as a U. S. Marine Corps officer for 30 years (1938 to 1968), as a farmer in Iowa (1945 to 1950), as a Nevada state employee in Comprehensive Health Planning and in the Extension Service in Civil Defense (1968 to 1983), and as an advocate, teacher, and trainer for exercise and resistance training in Nevada especially for senior citizens (1983 to 2012). In his Marine Corps career, he served in World War II (Eniwetok, Guam, and Okinawa), in Korea (the Inchon Landing and the subsequent battle for Seoul, the Chosin Reservoir, and the subsequence advance to the 38 parallel), and in Viet Nam (the chief of staff to General Lewis William Walt, Commanding Officer of the Marines in Viet Nam at Danang). He was decorated many times for his heroic efforts including the Navy Cross in 1944 at the battle of Eniwetok and a number of Silver Stars and Bronze Stars in subsequent actions. He retired in 1968 at the USMC Logistical Center in Barstow, California. In his last career as an advocate, teacher, and trainer for exercise and resistance training in Nevada especially in the elderly, he received the Governor’s Point of Lights Award in 2002. He also led a 40-participant resistance exercise class 3 days a week at the Carson City Senior Center for many years finally retiring in 2012. He was truly one of the members of the greatest generation that America has produced. He was predeceased by his first wife Virginia Martin. He is survived by wife Vi Martin, his son Glen Martin (Carol) of Lincoln, Nebraska, his son Harry Pukay-Martin (Susanna) of Worthington, Ohio, his daughter Beth Anderson (Jeff) of Huntsville, Alabama, and his daughter Cindy Smith (Les) of Tyler, Texas He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. His memorial service will take place in the Carson City Senior Center at 911 Beverly Drive in Carson City on January 15, 2016 at 3:00 PM. His internment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
