Prep roundup: Douglas boys clinch playoff berth

MINDEN — Zach Kellar scored 19 points and Connor Lyons 15 Tuesday and the Douglas High boys basketball team clinched a playoff berth with its 68-52 Senior Night victory against Damonte Ranch at Randy Green Court.

Douglas (8-7, 10-15) now holds a two-game lead over Damonte Ranch (6-9, 5-13) in the race for fourth-place and the Sierra League’s final playoff berth. The Tigers will open in the Northern Division I Region Tournament next Tuesday with a contest at High Desert League champion Spanish Springs.

Douglas led start to finish on a night that produced its best offensive performance of the season. The 68 points were a single-game high for the season and the Tigers shot a blistering 24-for-42 (57 percent from the field). The Tigers were 7-for-13 from 3-point range and Kellar was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Kellar’s first 3-pointer gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead and his second extended the lead to 11-5. The Mustangs never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

Senior Sam Broersma scored 10 of his 12 points in the first quarter and finished the game with seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Tigers.

Lyons, a senior guard, also connected on a 3-pointer in the first quarter and finished with seven points in the final quarter to help Douglas put the game away.

Brett Cooper scored 19 points to lead Damonte Ranch. The senior guard scored 10 in the first quarter, then was limited to two points in the second and third periods.

Spanish Springs clinched the High Desert League boys title Tuesday with a 63-55 win against North Valleys.

Virginia City rolls

Clint Hess scored 23 points and Colt Hess added 11 points as Virginia City (22-2, 13-0) rolled to a 70-10 win over Sage Ridge. The Muckers play at Coleville today and then have a huge showdown at Whittell on Friday.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Douglas 55, Damonte Ranch 36

MINDEN — Leonna Mortimer poured in 20 points as the Douglas High girls basketball team reached the 20-win plateau for the season with its 55-36 Senior Night win against Damonte Ranch.

Douglas (12-3, 20-5), already assured of second-place in the Sierra League, will play at home next Wednesday in the first round of the region tournament (against either North Valleys or McQueen).

The Tigers surged to an 18-4 first quarter lead and extended the advantage to 37-15 at halftime against Damonte Ranch (5-10, 8-13).

Mortimer scored 14 of her game-high points in the first half and finished the night with a pair of 3-pointers.

Maddy Lowe also contributed 10 points, Corryne Millett eight and Kaycee Battcher eight for Douglas. Megan Carlson scored 13 points and Morgan Waller 12 for the Mustangs.

Truckee edges Dayton

Angela Sikora had a double-double with 13 poins and 11 rebounds for Dayton in its 42-34 loss to Truckee.

Christi Ricci had eight points with three steeals and went 6-for-8 from the foul line, Elvia Diaz scored five points and Makayla Olson added four points for the Dust Devils.

“I was very pleased with our rebounding tonight and saw some numbers from Abby Sikora and Kristina Mason on the boards,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “We were pushing hard in the second half and the thing about our girls is that they never give up. They continue to run, continue to work hard on defense until the final buzzer. “

On Monday, Dayton lost to Fallon, 73-20.
