Nevada state Sen. Debbie Smith has announced that she will be discharged from a Texas hospital nearly two weeks after having a brain tumor removed.
The 59-year-old Democrat underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor on Feb. 6 at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Senate Democrats issued a statement Monday saying Smith will remain in Houston for follow-up treatment.
Smith’s family says she is doing well and is closely following Senate news.
Smith was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000 and won a seat in the Senate in 2012. The Reno Democrat has won several lawmaker of the year awards and is the president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
