SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: For Carson City team, it’s in the (bean) bag

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Here’s to the Carson Capitals, Carson Plaza’s bean bag baseball team of Carson City, who won the Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games. Anyone who’s played bean bag baseball knows it’s a lot more difficult than it looks, so the Capitals did indeed pull of an impressive feat by taking home the gold.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement from Washoe and Douglas counties for their diligent work in breaking up a burglary ring that has plagued the three counties since last summer. So far as of the writing, six arrests have been made in the case and Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said there are more to come.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson High’s Brady Rivera, Brady O’Keefe, Nolan Shine, Brandon Basa and Sheldon Miller and to Douglas High’s Zach Singer for the performances in the State Wrestling Championships. O’Keefe placed second, River and Basa were third and Miller and Singer took fourth. Rivera, O’Keefe and Shine also won zone titles.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Silver State Gymnastics Academy for winning the overall title at the Nevada Challenge of Gymnastics.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson High School students Kyle Glanzmann, Alana Burson, Jessica Preston, Victoria Defilippi, Alexandra Siple, Ella Haggerty and Steici Torres for creating winning public service announcements as part of the freshmen transitions program in partnership with the Carson City Library. Their videos will be shown at the Galaxy Theater.

WOODEN NICKEL: Appropriate from Nevada, Andre Agassi was once part of a promotional campaign stating “image is everything” and Republican state legislators still seem to have a hard time grasping that. The latest faux pas came from Assemblywoman Michele Fiore who said “hot little girls” need weapons to defend against rape. A message to Fiore — when your statement makes national news — that’s not good for Nevada’s image.
