Community spotlight: Hostler advances to national free-throw event

Doug Hostler won the Elks Club Region 7 free-throw championship and earned the right to advance to the nationals finals in Springfield, Mass., in April.

Hostler competed in the 12-13 division.

Thomas Burchett, competing in the 10-11 division, placed fourth in the regional competition. The region brings together boys and girls from Nevada, California, Utah, Hawaii and Arizona.

Hostler and Burchett both advanced to the regional competition by performing well at the district and state level. Hostler was second in the local competition and moved on when Jordan Torres was unable to move on because of a conflict. He won the state contest. Burchett won at the district and state level.

Reese Torres won in the 8-9 division locally and finished second in the district. Reese MacKenzie, 10-11 girls, and Dana Myrehn, 8-9 girls, advanced from the local contest but failed to place at state.

• Riley Mello, a fifth-grader at CC Meneley, won first place in the 10-11 girls Hoop Shoot West Regional competition on Feb. 21 in Las Vegas. She moves on to the national contest in April.

Packers in first place

in flag football

The Packers beat the Cardinals, 27-13, and the Bears, 59-32, to take over first place in the Talents Indoor Flag Football League.

Against the Cardinals, Zach Guthrie threw three TD passes and Dana Myrehn ran for a score. Alex Myrehn caught two scoring passes and Parker Story caught one scoring pass. Decarlo Quintana and Keagan Ferris had interceptions.

Against the Bears, Guthrie threw five TD passes, Quentin Beck threw for one and Alex Myrehn threw for one. Beck had a TD reception, Caid Milligan had two as did Myrehn. Ferris, Quintana and Dayna Myrehn all scored a TD.

Tigersharks’ Russell shines

in St. Valentines meet

Larkin Russell, 6, was overall high point winner for his age group at the recent meet at Carson Valley Swim Center.

Russell won all seven of his events — 25 breaststroke, 25 back, 25 free, 25 fly, 50 back, 50 breaststroke and 50 free.

Here’s the rundown on swimmers who finished top-three:

Robert Dougherty, 14: third in the 1,650 free, fourth in the 1,000 free; eighth in the 200 breaststroke; 11th in 200 free; 12th in 100 free and 200 IM.

Ewan Kalley, 8: won the 50 breaststroke; second in 50 fly, 100 free and 100 IM; third in 25 and 50 back; fourth in 25 free.

Katarina Klatt, 9: Second in 200 IM.

Matteas Klatt, 11: Second in 400 IM.

Brett Kolb, 14: Second in 1,650 free, 200 back, 200 free and 500 free; third in 200 breaststroke; fourth in 100 free.

Nick Melsheimer, 10: Third in 50 fly; fourth in 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 free, 100 IM, 100 fly, 100 back.

Kennedy Redican, 10: Second in 50 breaststroke; sixth in 50 free.

Brynn Russell, 8: Third in 25 and 50 breaststroke; fifth in 50 back and 100 IM; sixth in 100 free; seventh in 25 back; ninth in 50 free; 10th in 25 fly,

Nicole Van Geel, 14: Second in 100 back; third in 200 back; fourth in 1,650 free; sixth in 200 free and 1,000 free; seventh in 500 free; eighth in 100 free.

Jake Xie, 9: Third in 200 IM; eighth in 50 fly and 100 back; ninth in 100 IM; 10th in 50 breaststroke and 50 free; 11th in 100 free.

Carson bowlers roll

past Sparks, Reed

Carson won twice recently to improve to 7-0 in league play.

Playoffs started Tuesday at Coconut Bowl in Sparks.

On Feb. 21, Carson beat Reed, 43-2. Dustin Floyd led the way with a career-high 268 and career-high 718. Alec Fletcher rolled a 289 and 679, Brett Paulson had a 247 and 641, Eugene Mills had a career-best 234 and a career-best 640, Tyler Lethcoe had a 264 and 634, Skylar Belcher had a 252 and 631 and Matt Hinton rolled a 236 and 615.

On Feb. 17, Belcher rolled a 299 en route to a 621. Conlin Herrick had a 213 and 617, and Fletcher finished with a 200-598.

Floyd had a 263-590, Paulson a 206-574 and Lethcoe a 206-573.

Sierra Lutheran seeks

volleyball coach

Sierra Lutheran is looking for a varsity volleyball coach for the coming season.

Booster golf tourney

set for Edgewood

The 28th annual Booster Golf Tournament, a fund-raiser for Whittell and South Tahoe high schools, is set for May 2-3 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

These are two separate one-day tournaments. The top three teams win prizes, and there are raffle prizes, a $100 closest-to-the-pin contest and hole-in-one contest.

The cost is $145, and if you want to play both days the cost is $260.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. both days and golf starts at 11 a.m.
