Local government unions would have to draft an annual report about their organization’s dues and expenditures if a bill before the Nevada Legislature passes.

Members of the Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee reviewed AB109 on Monday. It would require unions to compile financial information each January, and present it to members and the legislative auditor upon request.

Republican Assemblywoman Robin Titus says private sector unions are required to disclose their financial information under the Landrum-Griffin Act, but that doesn’t cover public sector unions. She said the bill will bring equity and accountability.

Union officials who oppose the bill say they already provide detailed financial information to members, and thought the bill invaded the privacy of members and the organization.

They also argued that compiling it would be expensive and time-consuming.
