The black cap was drawn over the doomed wretch’s head and tied under his neck. With a mournful thud the executed murderer — a prey to humanity and to himself — was hanging in the air with twitching muscles and a broken neck. Owing to a misunderstanding, no doctor could be found in the crowd. There was no one there who could pronounce Murphy dead, dead, dead and he was left there swinging 20 minutes.
