140 Years Ago

Missionary work. The benevolent ladies of Carson are doing good work among the heathen and are at work teaching the Chinese men and boys to read and write. They are assisted in their Christian enterprise by an intelligent Chinese man, Ah For, who converted to the Protestant faith. The ladies cooperating with him built a chapel in Chinatown dedicated to the worship of the white man’s God.

130 Years Ago

Terrible night at Cave Rock. By the time Reik had gone about a hundred yards, the bear relinquished the dead horse. Reik’s only hope was to climb Cave Rock before the bear, and he clambered up the precipitous pathway with the bear 20 yards behind him. To is horror he saw no available path up the steep face of the rock. As a last resort he found a large stone and flung it at the face of the grizzly. (Continued on Wednesday.)

Old time minstrels. The original Georgia Minstrels are appearing at the Carson Opera House. It is the oldest and best-known minstrel company in the United States and as dealers in wholesome blackface comedy. This season they present a genuine revival of old-time songs, strange melodies and quaint and picturesque dances peculiar to the antebellum days.
