A public meeting on the pros and cons of Common Core standards will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the Legislative Building, room 1214. The event is being hosted by Assemblyman P.K. O’Neill and Citizens for Sound Academic Standards.
Organizers of the event state Nevada adopted Common Core before the program was completed without any kind of public review. Some states never adopted Common Core and some states which adopted the standards have since rescinded Common Core.
The pros and cons of Common Core will be presented at the meeting by professor James Milgram and professor Sandra Stotsky and Nevada Department of Education representatives Steve Canavero and Judy Osgood. Moderator will be Ron Smith, Lt. Governor elect for Kiwanis Division 45.
A question and answer session will follow the panel discussion. Issues to be discussed include loss of local control, parent and teacher roles, data collection, testing and costs.
