ELKO — State and federal officials are investigating the death of a contract worker in an accident at an underground gold mine in northeast Nevada.

Newmont Mining Corp. spokeswoman Mary Korpi confirmed Monday that one employee was killed in the accident in a vent shaft at the Leeville mine north of Carlin Sunday afternoon.

Korpi told the Elko Daily Free Press that the worker was employed by Cementation Inc.

She says the company is working with the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Nevada Mine Inspector’s Office to investigate the cause of the accident.

No other details have been released.
