Carson City resident Joseph David Winters killed in rollover

A Carson City man was killed after his vehicle rolled over at Lake Tahoe early this morning.

Joseph David Winters, 27, was eastbound on Highway 50 at around 2 a.m. when his 2001 Jeep Wrangler left the roadway and hit the guardrail twice, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The Jeep rotated and crossed the highway and struck a raised curb. The vehicle overturned ejecting Winters. Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies were the initial first responders on scene and requested the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department who confirmed that Winters had succumbed to the injuries he sustained from the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

NHP spokesman Trooper Dave Gibson said the preliminary investigation indicates that Winters was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this crash. No lanes were blocked as a result of the crash.

That area of Highway 50 is two lanes in each direction with a 45 mph speed limit with no roadway lighting. The accident is still under investigation.
