Prep roundup: Carson has strong first day at Redwood

VISALIA, Calif. — After the first day of the Redwood Invite, the Carson High wrestling team is in second place.

The Senators’ 99.5 points trails Clovis High School — a national power, wrestling without many of its best wrestlers — by 1.5 points (101). Host Redwood is third with 90.5 points, Monarch is fourth with 90 points and Mount Whitney is fifth with 67.5 points.

Carson has 10 wrestlers still alive and six in the semifinals.

In the semifinals are Brandon Basa (3-0) at 113 pounds, Spencer Rogers (2-0) at 126 pounds, Nolan Shine (2-0) at 160 pounds, Connor Sievers (2-0) at 182 pounds, Brady Rivera (2-0) at 220 pounds and heavyweight Sheldon Miller (2-0). Still alive in the tournament are Terin Keller (2-1) at 106 pounds, Casey Stevens (2-1) at 120 pounds, Nathan Mersino (1-1) at 132 pounds and Jarod Butler (2-1) at 152 pounds.

“We wrestled really well,” coach Paul Carter said. “We are in pretty good position (heading into today).”

BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL

Galena 61, Douglas 40

MINDEN — Noah Peck knocked down three straight 3-pointers within a span of one minute, 15 seconds to spark Galena’s game-breaking 14-0 run to start the third quarter at Randy Green Court.

Galena (6-2 league, 14-5 overall) extended its 25-20 halftime lead to 39-20 en route to the win against Douglas (5-3 league, 7-11 overall) in a matchup between teams that came into the night tied for second-place in the Sierra League standings.

In the end, Galena’s inside strength was too much for the Tigers to overcome, as 6-foot-5 Josiah Wood scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half while 6-7 Zack Lessinger scored 14.

Peck, a 5-10 junior guard, scored all nine of his points during the third quarter run — the last of those shots pushing Galena’s lead to 39-20 with 4:58 showing on the clock.

Michael Johnson and Jace Hart led Douglas offensively with eight points each. Hart scored six of his points, including a layup assisted by Zach Kellar, to cut Galena’s lead to 22-20 in the final minute before halftime.

Dayton outshoots Fernley

FERNLEY — Davis Winebarger scored 22 points to lead Dayton to a 58-49 road win over the Vaqueros.

The Dust Devils improved to 2-6 in Division 1A play heading into Tuesday’s non-league game at home against Virginia City.

Fernley played a sagging man-to-man and paid the price. Dayton hit a plethora of 3-pointers.

“That’s the best offense we’ve played this season,” coach Jason Santos said. “We hit a bunch of 3s in the first half. I’m hoping this a breakout game for us.”

Blake Blocker added 11 and Jackson Walker 9 for Dayton.

Muckers keep rolling

VIRGINIA CITY — Clint Hess scored 24 points, and VC improved to 5-0 and 13-2 with an easy 77-21 win over Coleville Friday.

Tristan Steele chipped in 14 and Sam McCain 10 for VC. Coleville was led by Joel Gomez’s 15 points.

VC visits Dayton Tuesday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL

Douglas rolls Grizzlies

MINDEN — Maddy Lowe and Corryne Millett combined to score 38 points as Douglas (15-3 overall, 7-1 league) extended its win streak to seven games with a 57-25 win.

Lowe scored 17 of her 19 points in the first half to boost the Tigers to a 32-14 halftime advantage. Millett scored 12 of her 19 points in the second half.

Alissa Holley and Leonna Mortimer added eight and six points respectively for the Tigers.

Kaitlyn Hawthorne scored 16 points to lead Galena (5-10, 2-6).

Douglas hosts Bishop Manogue Tuesday in a showdown between Sierra League leaders.

Fernley doubles up Dayton

FERNLEY — Angela Sikora put up 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the loss at Fernley Friday night.

“It was a great game from the start with a lot of intensity and hustle, especially when the second string hit the floor when we had a little foul trouble early in the game,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “We ran the floor well and passed better than I have seen all season. Even though we kept beating Fernley down the floor, we had a little trouble getting our shots to drop. We also let Fernley have way too many second chances.”

Pyramid Lake pummels Sierra Lutheran

Cali Benton led the Sierra Lutheran girls basketball team with eight points Friday night but it wasn’t enough as the Falcons dropped a league contest to Pyramid Lake, 39-21.

The Falcons were down 10 after the first quarter but played nearly even with Pyramid Lake the rest of the game. Amy Westre had seven rebounds while Benton added six.

SLHS falls to 4-11 and 2-4 in league.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Wallace sparks Carson

Greg Wallace had 24 points as the Carson boys JV basketball team rolled against Wooster Friday night, 64-27, at Morse Burley Gym.

Geraet Rauh added 10 points while Taylor Saarem and Brandon Gagnon each added eight.

The team improved to 9-7 on the year.

FRESHMEN BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson goes wild in 4th quarter

RENO — The Carson freshmen boys basketball team used a fourth quarter rally to knock off Wooster, 49-40, Friday night.

Carson outscored the Colts 23-9 in the final period. Dawson Lamb scored 17 points for Carson. Trent Robison added 15 for the Senators.

FRESHMEN GIRLS BASKETBALL

CHS girls grab easy win

RENO — Dajarrah Navarro scored 14 points and Katelyn Morris added 10 to lead the Senators to a 38-21 win on Friday.

Carson is now 11-4.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson wins thriller

RENO — Mallory Otto scored 12 points, Josie Share had 10 points and Molly Otto had eight points for Carson (13-3, 7-1), who edged Wooster on Friday.

CHS girls 6th, boys 7th

ALPINE MEADOWS — The Carson High girls team, led by Bailee Barber and Hannah Parks, finished sixth at Thursday’s slalom race.

Emma Breeding was 33rd and Alison Greene 35th.

The boys, despite a 19th place for Ian VanRensselaer, took seventh. Karson Law was 36th, Noah Giron 37th, Richard Stock 45th, Matt Gunkel 49th and Adam Daniels was 55th.

In the JV race, Shane Morton was 13th.
