Flooding flume. Sam Wright woke up to the dismal cries of two Chinese servants who were lying in the kitchen part of his house. He jumped out of bed to find out the cause of distress and stepped into water ankle deep. The big flume which turns the corner by Hub Parker’s house had been lifted up by the water and discharged its contents and flooded his house. Sea serpent. The eminent scientist, Mr. Proctor, believes in the sea serpent as a living thing. It has been refused a place in science. The testimonies are quite as good and convincing as the evidence that the plesiosaurus ever existed. Proctor would be just the man to back up the romances which from time to time are given to the world by the Carson Appeal, a Nevada newspaper, which for ingenious lying has no peer in America (Baltimore Sun).

State Orphans Home completed. The State Board in charge of the Orphan’s Home made an inspection of the building and has accepted the building and the keys were turned over to Superintendent Josephs. The contract price was $36,950 — builders were Holesworth and Fowler of Reno. It is made of stone which the state furnished and consists of two stories 12 feet high and a basement. It is surmounted by a handsome tower whose flag pole is 125 feet from the ground. (Continued on Wednesday.)

Children and parents gathered around at the Children’s Museum to sing “Happy Birthday” to Martin Luther King. “If we’re going to celebrate his birthday, let’s celebrate it kid-style,” said Gale Thomssen, education coordinator.
