SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Carson City truly a ‘Capital’ idea

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: We’ll pat ourselves on the backs for knowing what has been true all along — Carson City is truly the best destination in the country when it comes to the nation’s capitals. A USA Today poll naming us as such just confirmed what we already knew. The Reno-Tahoe area has a lot to offer and we’re right smack in the middle of it. Here’s an idea: Let’s place something like “Carson City — Nation’s Best Capital Destination” on our signs welcoming people into the city limits.

SILVER DOLLAR: One small step for man — one giant climb for mankind. Congratulations to Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson for completing what has been considered the world’s most difficult rock climb — using only they hands and feet to ascend the 3,000-foot vertical wall of El Capitan. Others had been trying to accomplish the feat for more than a half a century.

And Caldwell and Jorgeson are both Americans. So now, not only are we the best at hot dog eating, we’re the best at rock climbing as well. USA! USA!

SILVER DOLLAR: To Robert S. Schriehans for being named as Carson City’s new fire chief. And to outgoing fire chief Stacy Giomi for his service to the community.

SILVER DOLLAR: Another Silver Dollar also goes to outgoing Carson City treasurer Al Kramer for his service to the community.

WOODEN NICKEL: Regardless of where you stand on Common Core and whatever rules were agreed upon, teachers who have experienced Common Core should be able to speak at any forum on the subject. Teachers who have experienced Common Core should have been given the chance to speak at last week’s forums in Carson City and Fallon, no matter what the circumstances.

WOODEN NICKEL: Another Wooden Nickel goes to the Carson City Board of Supervisors for scheduling an all-day — and all-night meeting on Thursday, which just happened to conflict with Gov. Brian Sandoval’s State of the State address.
