Carson Tahoe Health is providing patients with a state-of-the-art system that identifies and treats lung cancer earlier and more accurately than ever before. The new superDimension™ Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) system enhances patient outcomes by using GPS-like technology to detect lesions, stage suspicious areas for biopsy and treat cancers found in the lungs.
Nearly two-thirds of all lung lesions are outside the reach of a bronchoscope (a traditional method used for detecting lung lesions). The core technology for superDimension™ extend beyond the capabilities of the traditional bronchoscopy to distant, previously inaccessible regions of the lungs, enabling physicians to locate small lung lesions for diagnostic testing and to place markers for future treatment.
“The SuperDimension™ Bronchosopy is a far less invasive procedure that can be effective in the early diagnoses of lung cancer,” said Dr. Faisal Ahmad, pulmonologist at Carson Tahoe Health. “The technology guides us through the intricate web of pathways inside the lungs, allowing us to access and sample targeted abnormal tissues without surgery or a needle biopsy.”
In Nevada alone, the American Cancer Society estimates that 2,040 will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year and that 1,420 will die of the disease. Dr. Ahmad performed the first ENB treatment at Carson Tahoe Heath on Friday, January 14. The new technology will play an important role in enhancing Carson Tahoe Health’s cancer treatment programs.
