Prep roundup: Rivera rallies to take 3rd

SACRAMENTO — After a quarterfinals loss, Brady Rivera won four straight matches to take third place at the Tim Brown Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Rivera lost to the No. 2 seed in the quarters, and then rebounded nicely.

Nolan Shine, Carson’s other quarterfinalist after Friday’s action, apparently suffered a shoulder injury. He lost both of his matches Saturday and failed to place.

Brandon Basa (113) won his opening match and then lost to finish 3-2 on the weekend. Spencer Rogers (126) lost his opening match and went 3-2. Heavyweight Sheldon Miller lost his first match of the day and went 2-2.

“It was a tough tournament,” Carson coach Paul Carter said. “There were some really good kids. Basa’s class was really tough. Everybody he wrestled was good. Sheldon did a good job getting to the second day. He’s learning how to wrestle the bigger guys (Miller weighs just 220). The tough thing was Nolan’s injury. We didn’t find out about it until after we got back to the hotel on Friday.

“Brady wrestled really well. He beat some good California kids. He did a great job (6-1 record) to come back and get third place.”

Carson returns to league action Wednesday against arch-rival Douglas at 6 p.m.

BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL

VC wins thriller

HAWTHORNE — Two clutch free throws by Colt Hess with 35 seconds left keyed Virginia City’s 46-45 win over Mineral County Saturday night.

Hess’ free throws gave VC a 46-42 lead. They came after Hawthorne fouled VC seven straight times so they could put the Muckers on the line. The Serpents hit a trey in the waning seconds, but VC was able to run out the clock.

Sam McCain led VC with 15 points, while Colt Hess added nine and Clint Hess eight. Clint Hess had to play against a box-and-one defense during the contest.

VC is 8-0 in conference and 17-2 overall.

GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL

Dayton loses twice

The Dust Devils lost to Sparks (52-49) on Friday and Lowry (53-17) on Saturday.

Dayton led 15-8 after one against Sparks, but trailed 19-17 at the half thanks to a 2-point second quarter. Dayton had a chance to send the game into overtime with 6 seconds left, but came up short.

“We got into foul trouble really early in the game, and that made us play tentatively,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “My girls did what they needed to do to win, but we had too many foul and too many turnovers.”

Angela Sikora led the way with 15 points, 12 steals, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Christi Ricci had 13 points. Elvia Diaz and Makayla Olson chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.

Against Lowry, points were difficult to come by. The Buckaroos held Dayton to six in the first half and cruised to victory. Ricci had six points, three rebounds and four steals, and Sikora had three points and seven rebounds.

“They are a sound team,” Frantz said.
