Darrell Moody: Dayton taking its time on new football coach

Dayton High School has yet to name a successor to replace Rob Turner as head football coach, and Principal Tim Logan said it very well could be another month before a decision is finally made.

When I talked to Logan at a recent Dayton basketball game, he said he will wait to see what kind of teaching position he will be able to offer any out-of-district candidate. Logan said he’s waiting to see if any current teachers are going to retire or leave. Those decisions will dictate what kind of teaching job he could offer. The DHS principal did say he would prefer to have an on-campus coach if possible, or somebody within the district.

Current assistant, Gary Stone, teaches at Dayton Valley Intermediate. Logan wouldn’t say whether Stone had officially applied or not.

Mike Burrows, who is in the private sector, would be a good hire for the head job if he has the time. He assisted Rick Walker, and is the current head baseball coach. He has been actively involved coaching youth sports in the area, and both of his kids played varsity sports at Dayton.

Western Nevada College is looking for an experienced radio announcer to take over for Chris Graham.

Graham recently was hired at the Nevada Legislature, thus was not going to be able to do the Wildcats’ games this season. He had worked as the voice of the Wildcats since 2007. He hasn’t ruled out returning to the booth sometime in the future.

Graham’s goal is to land a professional job. He’s hoping to intern with the Reno Aces at some point.

Anybody interested in announcing should contact coach D.J. Whittemore at 775-445-3250 or dj.whittemore@wnc.edu.

I’m still at a loss of words regarding the 49ers’ handling of Jim Harbaugh, and their decision to hire Jim Tomsula, who had never been a head coach or coordinator in the NFL

I certainly think Vic Fangio deserved the job based on the job he did with the 49ers, who were riddled with injuries this year.

Being a 49ers fan, I hope Tomsula does well. It’s a big step to take, and I always worry when you have guys like Jed York, who has no football background, making decisions.

Did Harbaugh get to big for his britches? Maybe. He has always had a reputation for being a stubborn kind of guy, and if he didn’t think he could work within the framework of the team, then he did the right thing by moving on.

So much was being made of the rift between him and the GM I’m sure it bothered the players despite what they said to the media.

I read with interest of Reno bidding to host the Big Sky men’s and women’s basketball tournament from 2016-2018 at the Reno Event Center.

Why?

Do people in Reno think many folks are going to show up? I doubt local fans will show up because they won’t know anybody playing. No offense to the Big Sky, but the conference should stick to campus sites. It’s not a good enough league to warrant an off-campus site. Moving the WAC tourney to the Orleans in Las Vegas I thought was a great idea, but people quite simply didn’t come. The West Coast Conference, with BYU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s don’t/won’t have any trouble filling up Orleans Arena.
