France. Victor Hugo, author of “Les Miserables,” wrote about the murder of President Lincoln: “Dear Mr. Julian Harney (who was involved in political reform), At the moment you were writing, the North was victorious and Lincoln alive. Today Lincoln is dead. That death ennobles Lincoln, and confirms the victory ... slavery is abolished ... long live liberty! Long live the Republic! I press your hand, signed, Victor Hugo.”

Local notes. The rear of the St. Charles Hotel is being rebuilt as the walls are settling. There is no foundation under a small addition to the building.

Home on visit. Phil Mighels, now residing in New York City, is home in Carson. He has to sniff the sagebrush every so often to be contented with the Atlantic seacoast.

Museum. Old steamers standing cowcatcher to cowcatcher were on display on the museum’s tracks. The Inyo, standard-gauge Baldwin American locomotive built in 1875 for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and the Eureka, a slightly smaller narrow-gauge steamer with the same year and made at the same factory. This was part of the Nevada State Railroad Museum Fourth of July Weekend Transportation Fair.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
