Though it was more of a concert under the clouds, it didn’t deter music lovers and philanthropists from enjoying the annual Concert Under the Stars Wednesday night in Carson City.
The event, held at Adele’s Restaurant, closed off parts of John and Curry streets to make way for the street fair-like atmosphere. The event had vendors from the community including Carson City BBQ, Tito’s Vodka Bar and L.A. Bakery. Patrons were singing and dancing along with live music performed by Pablo Cruise and Ambrosia.
“We came because we love the music,” Dana Yzurdiaga, a Carson City resident said. “I am a gardener and an ex-teacher and I love the idea of The Greenhouse Project.”
This event, hosted by Charlie and Karen Abowd, the owners of Adele’s, is the primary fundraising event for The Greenhouse Project which features a greenhouse at Carson High School. The Greenhouse Project aims to feed those in need in the community and help fund the agriculture program for CHS, said Karen. The Abowds are trying to help cultivate the agriculture program at CHS, which has 103 students enrolled for the coming year and donated $5,000 to the Future Farmers of America program.
“Last year, The Greenhouse Project grew 4,000 pounds of produce and donated 90 percent to the community and used 10 percent to give to the culinary program at Carson High,” Karen said to the audience.
The Abowds were also raising money for The Greenhouse Project and Future Farmers of America with live and silent auction with items donated from community members. All proceeds went back to the two organizations. Items were all garden related ranging from different flower pots to garden decorations. Bryan Bibee said he was looking at a spider statue made from a bowling ball and golf balls.
“I like the spider because it’s kind of warped,” Bibee said. “I think this whole event is neat, it’s great community support of a lot of people reaching into different things to help the community.”
So though the weather wasn’t as warm as in previous years, the dampened skies didn’t dampen the mood at Adele’s as supporters turned out to celebrate the cause and help the organizations.
“I just want to say thank you to everyone for braving the elements and supporting The Greenhouse Project,” Karen said.
