The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: The USNS Carson City is a Navy vessel now being built and we’re obviously proud the ship is going to be captained by a Carson City resident in Robert Wiley. Capt. Wiley has been a Carson City resident for 23 years.

In addition, another former Navy captain, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell will serve as the keel authenticator during a July 31 ceremony for the ship. There ceremony will be held at 9 a.m.

As the keel authenticator, Crowell will essentially sign off on the ship, literally signing his initials, to signify the keel has been truly and fairly laid. The July 31 ceremony is the first of two ceremonies for the ship as it nears service.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Bryce Lehmann, 10, of Carson City,. who became the youngest finisher at the 41st annual Ponderosa Ridge Run as the rain poured down at Lake Tahoe last Saturday morning. Lehmann effective almost ran his age, covering a 9.5-mile distance. But he also covered a course that starts at 7,300 feet and climbs nearly 2,000 feet in the first 4-1/2 miles to the top near Genoa Peak. He finished in 1 hour, 54 minutes.

Brett Long and Kari Long of Carson City are also among those who deserve Silver Dollars. Brett finished third overall, finishing the route from Spooner Summit to Kingsbury in 1 hour, 19.13 seconds. Kari finished second among women and eighth overall in 1:46:09.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in last week’s Concert Under the Stars to benefit The Greenhouse Project and Carson High’s FFA program. And to all those who braved the weather to attend the event. And especially to stars Ambrosia and Pablo Cruise who rocked the event.
