Thousands crowd Genoa at 100th anniversary fete

Thousands of western Nevadans crowded the tiny Carson Valley settlement of Genoa as the 100th anniversary of the state’s first dwelling was observed.

Federal, state and county dignitaries were on hand for the event.

Gov. Charles Russell has issued a proclamation setting aside the date as one of special observance and he urged all who could possibly attend to do so.

A suitable program was held under chairmanship of Henry F. Byers, Douglas County assemblyman. Talks were planned from the governor, Sen. Pat McCarran, Dr. Malcolm Love, president of the University of Nevada, and federal postal authorities.

Entertainment, including a performance of “The Romance of Scarlet Gulch,” was presented.

Carson’s VFW and its auxiliary, under guidance of Post Commander Alex Payer and Bernita Shaw, also took part in the celebration.

A birthday cake weighing 30 pounds and resplendent with 100 candles was presented to committee in charge of the celebration.

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
