63-year-old inmate dies at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center

Nevada prison officials say a 63-year-old inmate who had been jailed previously for sexually assaulting a person older than 65 has died.

Nevada Department of Corrections said Monday that James Besette died late Sunday at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center’s medical facility in Carson City.

Authorities say Besette was first imprisoned in 1988 when he was sentenced to life with parole for sexual assault and another 10 years for stealing a car. He was paroled in 2009 but returned to prison in 2012 and was serving up to 6 years for coercion.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office coroner will conduct an autopsy.
