Community spotlight: Carson High School will host V-ball clinic

Carson High will play host to a volleyball clinic for girls from fifth grade and above Aug. 12-13 with doubles play on Aug. 14.

The cost is $100, and the camp runs from 3 to 7 p.m. each day. Instruction will cover all skills.

• Carson High’s volleyball teams will have tryouts Aug. 15.

All athletes must report to the track at 7:30 a.m. All athletes must also have an athletic packet on file at the CHS athletic office.

Carson High’s varsity is playing in tournaments in Las Vegas and Arizona this season.

Prowse, Camp win

at Silver Oak

Bill Prowse and Wes Camp finished with net 64s to tie for first place in Flight 1 at the recent Silver Oak Men’s Club event on July 19.

Eric Ottenheimer and Jim Silsby tied for third with 67s and Jim Sapien and Larry Johnson tied for fifth with 68s.

Vern Payette won Flight 2 with a 63, while Dennis Prutch, Eric Moormann, Ryan Balik and Tyler Roberts tied for second with 65s.

• The team of Roger Cartwright, Tom Abbett, Gary Helseth and Barry Cernoch combined for a net 52 to win the Silver Oak Senior Men’s Club 4-man scramble on Tuesday.

Dale Dowd, Ray Moore, Bruce Kozak and Tim Bloom were second with a 54 and Joe Paden, John Scoville, Bb Lewis and Alex Talmant were third with a 56.

Olesek wins senior

event at Empire

Fred Olesek shot a net 65 to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club tournament on July 22.

John Hauck won a tiebreaker for second over Jim Shabi. Both had 67s.

Tom Sawyer won Flight B with a 63, two shots ahead of Robey Willis and three ahead of Rob Corbit. Donnie Curd won Flight C with a 62, one shot ahead of Jim Green and four ahead of Lee Ghiglieri. Greg Bentley won Flight D in a tiebreaker over Norm Scoggin. Both had 63s. Wes Franklin was third with a 68.

•The second annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament is set for Sept. 19 at Empire Ranch.

The cost is $75 for the four-person scramble. The fee includes golf, range balls, lunch and prizes. There’s a long drive for each division and closest to the hole.

Kidd, White tie in

Dayton tourney

Dayton — Brent Kidd and Jack White tied for first with 11 points in the Dayton Valley Palmer Club Individual Net Stableford tournament played July 18.

Dave Barnes and Alex Gentry tied for second with nine points and Vince McMahon and Larry Windsor tied for fifth with seven points.

Doug Dougherty took solo seventh with six points. Ken Dotson and Rankin Lynn finished tied for eighth with five points and Randy Anderson took 10th place with four points.

Gates, Torres win

Desperado at TC

Bob Gates and Richard Torres finished with 200 points to win the Thunder Canyon Desperado event held on two weekends in July.

Saul Singer and Mike Herdell were second at 193 and Steve Loos and Lee Plemel were third at 191. Jim Fitzpatrick and Mark Spini were fourth at 189.

The format was fourball par points and cha-cha par points.

In the Par 3 Challenge, Duane Lodrige and Mike Macey won with 24.5, Charlie Cockerill and Park Cockerill placed at 24.5, and Mike McGee and Vince Anderson, and Jeff Gussow and George Stillwagon won the show placing also at 24.5.

Jackson wins Blue Lakes

ride for Alta Alpina

Garth Jackson won the Alta Alpina Blue Lakes event in 59:59, nosing out Pike Reardon (1:02.20) and Robert Braun (1:03.02) in the A race on July 23.

Michael Bayer won the B race in 1:06.21, ahead of Andrew Huntington (1:08.06) and Eric Jacobs (1:08.07). Jenny Hamiter won the C race in 1:14.25, while Rik Ekert was second in 1:14.36 and Allen Huntington was third in 1:15.36. Leon Malmed won the D race in 1:27.39 and Chris Rhiner was second at 1:28.40.

Carson Valley club

wins in Califonia

Though it was a little late being reported, Carson FC’s U14 girls squad won the Independence Cup in Sacramento June 27-28.

The locals beat American River’s ‘02 team in a shootout, 1-0.
