Local sports roundup: Former WNC standouts earn postseason honors

Postseason recognition is pouring in for recent alums of Western Nevada College’s baseball program.

Christian Stolo, who pitched for the Wildcats from 2013-14, was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, following his junior season at the University of Nevada.

Stolo’s former Wildcat teammate, Alex Fife, a junior outfielder at Colorado Mesa University, earned first-team honors from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ All-Region team.

In addition, Dixie State University senior pitcher Evan Parker was tabbed as an All-Pacific West Conference first-team selection and teammate Donald Glover, a senior outfielder, was chosen to the second team.

Stolo, a left-hander who had a career mark of 13-5 at WNC, was unbeaten in six Mountain West decisions, leading the Wolf Pack to the conference title and a 41-15 overall record. His 2.68 earned run average was second in conference play and, he was third in strikeouts (49) and opponents’ batting average (.215). Overall, Stolo’s 8-2 record topped the Pack, and he finished with a 2.83 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings.

Fife, who was second to Conor Harber in hitting on WNC’s 2014 team, accomplished a rare feat by batting better than .400 in his first season for Colorado Mesa. In earning three postseason honors, Fife hit .415 with 15 doubles and seven homers. The contact hitter only fanned 16 times in 195 at-bats while accumulating a .610 slugging average and .498 on-base average.

His .415 batting average and 81 hits were tops in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Fife capped his brilliant junior season by hitting a walk-off homer to wrap up the RMAC tournament title for the Mavericks, who participated in the NCAA Division II tournament regionals and finished with a 48-9 overall record.

Parker and Glover, key components on WNC’s 2013 club, helped Dixie State win the PacWest title and finish with a 31-19 mark.

Parker, a closer, led Dixie State with a 2.66 ERA and 12 saves in receiving his second straight first-team selection. Parker is the all-time Dixie State career saves leader with 25 in just two seasons.

Glover made the PacWest’s second team after hitting .297 with 15 doubles and 36 RBI. A more telling stat was Glover made only two errors in 50 starts in center field.

Robert Mason, PGA golf pro at Silver Oak, and James Potter, Silver Oak assistant pro, are hosting a golf trip to Nuevo Vallarta from Jan. 13-20.

The trip is open to golfers and non-golfers alike. The cost is $1,850 per person.

• On May 10, Osu Kwon shot a net 60 to win Flight 1 at the Senior Men’s Club event at Silver Oak. Kwon edged Bert Wells by two shots and Kevin Johnson by seven shots. Charles Spencer, Eric Fujita and Jim Silsby tied for fourth with a 68. Joe Paden won Flight 2 with a net 61, five strokes better than Ron Tamori and eight better than Dennis Prutch and Philip Evich.

• On May 17, James Shabi won Flight 1 with a net 60, seven strokes better than Spencer and Harvey Naito. William Kapczynski won Flight 2 with a 68, one shot better than Jeff Cloutier and two better than Kevin Silsby.

• On May 24, Russell Nichols won Flight 1 with a net 64, two strokes better than Bret Lowrey and Cory Hauck. Paden won Flight 2 with a net 67, one shot better than Kelly Pingel and two ahead of J.P. Penrod.

• Don Fox and Jim Silsby shot a net 60 to win the 6-6-6 format on May 26. Tom Rackerby and Paden, and James Barnett and Paul Ford tied for second with 63s.

• Carli Vandervort shot a net 28.5 to win Flight 1 at last week’s Silver Oak Women’s Club event. Betty Messier finished at 30.0 while Kathy Washburn and Mary Luster tied for third at 30.5. Pam Christensen won Flight 2 with a 25.5, two ahead of Sue Farcello and 3.5 ahead of Jan Burgman.

Carson Valley hosts

July 21 shotgun event

Carson Valley Golf Club is hosting a shotgun tournament on July 21. The event is sponsored by the Carson Valley women’s golf group.

The cost for the four-person scramble is $65 which includes golf, cart, prize fund, continental breakfast and lunch.

• Mike Davis shot a net 46 to win the recent men’s club event. The format was throwing out the highest and lowest score on each nine. Davis beat Jesus Rey by five shots. Bruce Sanford won Flight B with a 48, two strokes better than Melvin Ness and Jack Zippwald. Paul Finan won Flight C with a 44, four shots better than Jim Tavernier.

• Brick Ludington and David Morris teamed for a net 58 to win Flight A at the recent two-man event. Marc Menezes and Larry Rutledge were second with a 62.

Melvin Ness and Matt Budjako won Flight B with a 66, four strokes ahead of Neal Linebarger and John Pearson. Jim Arens and Gary Carsten won Flight C with a 70, two shots better than Larry Lockwood and Paul Finan.

Sawyer, Teague top

Tom Sawyer won a tiebreaker over Henry Teague to win Flight A at the recent stroke play tournament at Empire Ranch. Both shot 67s. John Hauck also shot 67, but was third.

Tony Grinceri won Flight B with a 68, a stroke ahead of Mike Vadnais. Wes Franklin shot a 64 to win Flight C by two shots over Joe Gibson. Clark Reid won Flight D with a 65, one shot better than Bob Blom.

• The men’s club is away today, and golfers can play Empire all day for $33 which includes a cart.

Hansen group wins

Gourmand tourney

Travis Hansen, Severin Carlson, Matt Henry and Owen Mackedon shot a 55 to win the 21st annual Gourmand Scramble at Eagle Valley on May 31.

Paul Craik, Dan Hollman, Jim Hodges and Ken Napoletano took first low net with a 51, edging Marty Colwell, Carol Colwell, Kathy Colwell and Conrad Hooge by a shot.

The tournament benefits the Community Counseling Center.

Palmer wins crown

at Dayton Valley

DAYTON — Andrew Palmer fired a 3-under gross 69 with a 2-handicap for a net 67 to win the Dayton Valley Palmer Club Individual Net tournament played May 9.

Ray Benefiel took second place honors with a net 68. Jim Flores and Paul Renner each shot net 69 to tie for third. Mike Griswold finished solo fifth with a 71 and Jim Doherty and Jack White tied for sixth at even-par 72. Randy Steele finished in eighth with a 73 and Danny Arnett and Bob Amato tied for ninth at 74.

Also placing were Lamar Bailey, Alex Gentry, Brad Hooten, and Vince McMahon tied for 11th place at 75 and Randy Anderson, John Benkert and Doug Dougherty tied for 15th with net 76.
