Carson City couple celebrating 50 years of marriage

Annette and Leo A. Mankins, who have lived in the Douglas and Carson City area for more than 58 years, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Thursday.

The Mankins were married on June 4, 1965, at First United Methodist Church in Carson City.

Leo moved to Gardnerville at age 12 and graduated from Douglas High School in 1963. He worked for Al’s Plumbing & Heating for many years, then owned his own business, Leo’s Shop, in Carson City, from 1983 to 1999.

Annette graduated from Las Vegas High School and moved to Carson City in 1962. She worked many years for the State of Nevada, then 13 years as Judge Michael Griffin’s secretary.

The couple has two children, both of Carson City — Carrie Lynn Kiser, married to P.D. Kiser, and LeAnn Mankins Saarem, married to Dave Saarem; and five grandchildren — Cody Z Kiser, Ashley Saarem, Cheyenne Kiser, Maddison Saarem, and Taylor Saarem. The Mankins love hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, ATV riding, traveling and, most of all, spending time with their family. John B. Mankins Park in Carson City was recently named after the couple’s ancestors who lived in and settled this part of Nevada in the mid 1800s.
