150 years ago

George Kirk, who shot Alex Hunter and then escaped from the State Prison last winter and was subsequently arrested in Placer County, Calif., and brought back here, can show more gunshot wounds than any honest man. The whole front part of his front coat is riddled, both legs of his pantaloons shot away at the bottom. He has some 12 shots in his hip and legs; and Sheriff Smith says he counted 24 shots in his clothes. He received his wounds from a shotgun charged with revolver bullets. He is quite well of his wounds. A halter is the only thing that will kill him. He got his dose of lead after his assault on Hunter.

130 years ago

Gov. Adams is just now engaged in fighting the Appeal in the state Capitol by keeping from it all the official advertising that he can. During some years past it has fallen in the line of our duty to criticize the acts of Gov. Adams. We have spoken the exact truth about the man, and in nearly every instance our facts have borne out. He has now undertaken to shut the Appeal out of its share of official advertising.

100 years ago

Another new and very important service has been added to the state Capitol building. It is what is called the clock system for the night watchman. There are nine stations with the clock and a key with a chain attached to a small box for safe keeping. The watchman is required to make his rounds every hour.

70 years ago

From the ridiculous to the sublime, a story from the Boulder City News: All the lady dogs in Boulder City are slowly returning to normal. For the last week, since the periodical visit of Dr. George Caldwell, a Reno veterinarian, the feline canines have been sporting bandages around their midriffs. Frequently two of them would be seen to stop at a corner and pass the time of day. “Probably woofing about their operations like all women,” one interested bystander hazarded. All pooches sported a cardboard collar to help stop nipping at the bandages. One person, stopping between busses snorted. “First darned town I ever saw where dogs wore diapers.”

50 years ago

Ronald Saunders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Prichard, Sr., is stationed in the Dominican Republic as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and has been there since the Civil War started.

30 years ago

A state of emergency was declared and construction approved of a water line in Lakeview to help with pressure problems.
