The Douglas County Public Library Teen Advisory Board and other teens are hosting a Mario Kart tournament from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 19, at the Minden branch, 1625 Library Lane.

Board games will also be available; the free program includes pizza, popcorn and drinks.

Tea fundraiser at Governor’s Mansion to help nursing scholarships

Big Hat High Tea, an afternoon of entertainment, food and tea to benefit nursing scholarships, will be at 2 p.m. June 27 at the Governor’s Mansion.

The event, sponsored by Nevada Nurses Association, includes a silent auction and a raffle for a $1,000 Visa credit card; a $1,000 medical spa certificate; Waterford Crystal collectables; and a black pearl necklace valued at $1,750.

Emblem Club’s Father’s Day brunch set June 21

The Carson City Emblem Club No. 507 is hosting its Father’s Day brunch from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Carson City Elks Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St.

The cost is $10 per person, a fee that includes waffles with berries and cream; eggs to order; country fried potatoes and ham.

Troy Morgan, vice admiral and Tahoe area regional contact for the Burning Man festival, will address Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at Bliss Mansion.

Training for foster and adoptive parents to begin June 13

Division of Child and Family Services is hosting training for foster and adoptive parents from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. June 13, 14 and 20 in the Valley View Room on the third floor of Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, 1600 Medical Parkway.

The training curriculum utilized is Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education, or P.R.I.D.E., which consists of nine three-hour sessions designed to educate and equip applicants to provide foster and/or adoptive care to children in the child welfare system.

Foster and adoptive care needs arise when the safety and protection of a child is not met by their parents or caregiver. If relatives cannot be located for a child who needs out-of-home placement services, the Division of Child and Family Services helps by arranging foster care placement. The removal of a child from his or her natural environment is taken only as a last resort, as part of the overall continuum of services provided by DCFS.

Foster parents are required to attend a pre-service training prior to obtaining a license. A foster family must meet all minimum licensing standards as established by Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 424.

FBI background checks are conducted on all applicants and residents 18 years of age or older living in the home. After the initial license is issued, resource families must complete four hours of advanced training per year in order to keep the license current. Licenses are renewed annually to assure an acceptable level of care is maintained by the foster parents and an on-site visit to the home is made for each renewal license issued.

Raley’s hosting summer drive to feed hungry

To help feed the hungry, all Raley’s, Bel Air and Nob Hill Markets will hold a summer donation drive from June 15 through July 31.

Customers will be welcome to donate $1 or more to Food For Families, and Raley’s will match donations, up to $25,000. All donations stay local.

Raley’s is at 3701 S. Carson St. in Carson City and 1363 U.S. Highway 395 in Gardnerville.

Dog obedience classes start at Fuji Park

Carson City Recreation’s basic dog obedience program, instructed by Guy Yeaman, starts June 16 and runs through July 21. Classes meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Fuji Park, across from Costco.

The class covers basic obedience commands and addresses individual problems and behaviors.

Each dog needs a training collar (choke chain, Halti, Martingale, harness, etc.) and a leash 4- to 6-feet in length. Dogs must be current on all shots through rabies; written record must be shown at the first class.

Fernley Republican Women to meet June 16

State Controller Ron Knecht and State Treasurer Dan Schwartz, who both took office in January, will be featured at Fernley Republican Women’s next meeting on June 16 at Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A.

A light meal will be served at 6 p.m., with the meeting following at 6:30.

Donations are encouraged for Fernley Republican Women’s Caring for America/Adopt-a-Soldier program, which collects non-perishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank along with donations of funds and care items for soldiers. Items sought for soldiers include: single serving food and personal care items and cards and letters from home.

Tickets available for Austin’s House Night at Aces Ballpark July 7

Tickets are available for Austin’s House Night at Aces Ballpark on Tuesday, July 7 for the Reno Aces game against the Sacramento River Cats at 7:05 p.m.

Bring your family and friends and wear your pink shirts for a great night of AAA baseball. Only 300 right field reserved seats are available for $12 each. Six dollars of each ticket sold goes directly to Austin’s House.

The event is part of the Reno Aces program to promote local nonprofit groups. Austin’s House will be recognized with a pre-game on-field check presentation and a post-game group photo.

Austin’s House is the only emergency children’s shelter in rural Northern Nevada. Staff provides services and care to up to 10 children from infants to age 18. The children are placed at Austin’s House after being removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Austin’s House provides the basic living necessities including proper nutrition, hygiene, rest, nurturing, recreation, companionship, life skills training and education. Austin’s House depends on continued generous support from the community to keep the doors open.
