Wanted. A recruiting office is wanted, to keep up the command stationed at and about Paradise Valley. The soldiers are deserting at the rate of two a day. The fellows go to Boise. An enlistment office at the same point would gather up disgusted pilgrims, returning from Boise, in greater number than the desertions. — Humboldt Register.

130 years ago

The frost. Yesterday there was a gnashing of teeth all through the valley as the owners of garden truck got up and looked at the work of the night’s frost. Everything was knocked cold. Potatoes, especially, were hit hard by the low temperature all leveled and blackened. Squashes, cucumbers, beans and corn were also laid out and nearly every species of vegetable that one could raise. The Chinese gardens were turned end over end, and there was moaning and lamentations among the celestials who pay $75 per acre rent for the ground.

Whereas, by an act of the Legislature approved in March, a provision was made for the establishment of an institution for delinquent boys, which institution, known as the Nevada School of Industry at Elko, will be ready for occupancy June 15 of this year.

With two members of the high school graduating class unable to be present because of serving the armed forces, diplomas were presented to 30 other members of the senior class at graduation exercises at the high school gymnasium.

The fundraising goal to build a permanent chapel at Carson-Tahoe Hospital has achieved its $25,000 goal said Hale B. Bennett, chairman of the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Board of Trustees.
