Community Spotlight: East Course at Eagle Valley turns 40

The East course at Eagle Valley is celebrating its 40th year of existence, and the course has specials going on now through June 21.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, you can play golf on the East course for $20 which includes a cart and lunch. Wednesday through Sunday, the cost is $25 with cart and lunch for 50-Mile Club members and it’s $30 on those days for non-members.

For the West course, the cost is $30 with cart and lunch for 50-Mile Club members and $40 for non-members. The West course fees are seven days a week.

There are $5,000 in prizes with daily raffle prizes. Register for the drawing at check-in. The grand prize drawing is June 21.

• Also, Eagle Valley is offering a summer camp for junior golfers (ages 6 through 15).

The camp dates are June 9-11, June 23-25, July 7-9, July 21-23 and Aug. 4-6. The camps run 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the cost is $75. The cost includes lessons, 9-hole birdie ball, lunch and beverages.

• Eagle Valley is offering free family golf clinics on May 31, June 14, June 28, July 5 and July 19. The clinics will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Every participant will get a free hot dog and soda.

Summer athletic camps at Nevada

RENO – The Nevada softball program has announced the dates for its 2015 summer camps. Head coach Matt Meuchel and his staff offer three different camps for girls of all ages and competition levels.

The Softball Elite Camp will take place from June 16-18 while the Summer and Introductory camps will run from June 23-25.

• The Nevada volleyball program has announced the dates for its 2015 summer camps to be held on campus at the Virginia Street Gym. First-year head coach Lee Nelson will offer two camps that provide volleyball skill and knowledge development for girls of all ages.

The Wolf Pack volleyball premier camp, which runs from July 17-19, is designed for girls of all skill levels entering the eighth grade or higher. Instruction will be fast-paced and intended to challenge players of all abilities. Athletes will be grouped based on their age and level of skill to enable each player to receive quality instruction during the camp. Instruction will include step-by-step progressions of all skills as well as team concepts and match play.

From July 20-23, Nelson and his staff will put on the Wolf Pack volleyball day camp. The day camp is designed for middle school and beginning high school players, girls and boys, who want to improve their skills and knowledge of the game. The camp will cover basic skills and playing strategies and athletes will be grouped according to ability to ensure quality instruction.

• New Nevada basketball coach Eric Musselman has announced the dates for his day camp at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Truckee Meadows from Aug. 3-6.

The camp is for boys entering third through eighth grades, and it runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The cost is $180.

CHS football dinner Aug. 22

The annual Carson High Football Boosters Club kick-off dinner is set for Aug. 22 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park.

The event was formerly held at the Nugget, but construction of a new parking garage forceda change of venue.

The cost is $25 per person for the all-you-can eat barbecue dinner. The food is being supplied by Carson City BBQ.

There will be music, raffle prizes and a silent auction. The grand prize is a $1,000 Visa gift card.

Shabi, Johnson tie at Silver Oak

James Shabi and Larry Johnson shot net 62s to tie for first place in Flight 1 at the Silver Oak Men’s Club tournament on May 31.

Eric Fujita, Tim Hines and Harvey Naito shot 63s to tie for third. Ron Tamori won Flight 2 with a net 63, two shots ahead of Don Fox and three ahead of Jordan Payette.

• Bob Lewis and Alex Talmant combined for a net 53 to win the Senior Men’s Club 2-man best ball event on June 2.

Roger Cartwright and John Vandervort were second at 54, Jim Silsby and Don Fox were third at 56, and there was a three-way for third at 57.

Gibson & Ghiglieri combine to win

Bill Gibson and Lee Ghiglieri shot a net 50 to win Flight A for the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club 2-man scramble held at Wolf Run on June 3.

David Knighton and Bob Warzynski shot 55, while Dennis Justin and Mala Chisek were third at 56. Albert Gianotti and Greg Bentley, via tiebreaker, won Flight B with a 55. Marshall McCurdy and Tom Sawyer were second with the same score. Don Wilson and Donnie Curd were third with a 56.

Couples event at Carson Valley

Carson Valley Golf Club is playing host to a Couples League every Wednesday at 5:30.

Pop Warner holds signups June 12

Carson City Pop Warner is holding signups June 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Governors Fields near the snack bar.

The league is the oldest and most established in the area. The league has open enrollment through July for both their football and cheer programs. Other teams in the league are South Lake Tahoe, Fallon, Truckee, Reno, Sparks and Douglas.

WildCats take 2nd in Sparks

The Nevada WildCats 18-U softball squad finished second at the recent NSA tournament held at Golden Eagle Regional Park in Sparks last weekend.

The WildCats went 2-1 in pool play, knocking off the Comets, 6-4, and the Sparks Storm, 8-6. The locals lost to the Sacramento Yard Sharks, 5-4. On Sunday, the locals beat the Yard Sharks, 15-0, and lost 9-6 in the title game to the Comets.

Taylor Caulk went 7-for-10 and drove in six runs while Britni Greninger went 7-for-10 with two RBI. Kayla Buckmaster went 6-for-11 while Paige Thorn and Kati Gonzales both went 5-for-11. Kelsie Callahan went 4-for-9.

Kaitlyn Jimmy won three games in the circle.
