150 years ago

Return of Gov. Blasdel. The governor returned from his reconnaissance among the Indians, night before last. He comes back looking as if campaigning agreed with him. We congratulate his excellency on his bronzed and healthful personal appearance. The governor found the Indians in great straits for food, and one of his first acts was to provide them with a supply of beef and flour (continued on Wednesday).

130 years ago

A couple of weeks ago, the Appeal sent bills to nearly 100 subscribers as a gentle reminder to settle for a year’s subscription. These parties embraced some of the leading names of the state; lawyers, judges, physicians, politicians and capitalists. Out of the entire lot only one man responded. It was C.P. Mason of the firm of Park & Lacy, Salt Lake. A man is often spoken of as “one of a thousand,” but in these times one in a hundred is worthy of special mention.

100 years ago

Spent day at the lake. A jolly picnic party, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Cowing, Mrs. Lee Bright, Miss Rosa Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Leland, Mrs. I. B. Maddux and Miss Frances Mae Maddux, spent yesterday at the lake resorts, returning well laden with trout caught with silver hooks.

Rumor is flying around that the mine closing ban was lifted today, but so far we have not had confirmation. However it is only a matter of time now, very short time.

50 years ago

Robert List of Carson City, State Young Republican chairman, left Sunday for the National Young Republican convention in Miami Beach.

30 years ago

Nevada’s classified employees will be getting pay raises July 1 — most for the first time in four years under a bill signed by Gov. Richard Bryan. The raise will give employees at least 14 percent over the next biennium.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
