Republican Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Beers says he’s dropping his long-shot bid for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Harry Reid.
Beers told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he joined the race more than a year ago to give Reid a challenger. But he said he’s been considering dropping out since late March, when Reid announced he would retire instead of seeking a sixth term.
Beers isn’t endorsing another Republican, but said he’s supporting his party in choosing a candidate who’s better financed and has higher name recognition than he does. Beers said he will seek re-election to the council in 2017.
Democratic former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto is running, and Republican Rep. Joe Heck said he’s seriously considering entering the race.
