For the past 23 years, Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. (RSVP) has sponsored the Independence Day Celebration at Mills Park in order to raise funds to support programs of service to Carson City elder Nevadans. RSVP’s mission is to help frail, homebound, and low-income seniors remain independent by providing high quality programs which allow them to stay in their own homes with dignity. Additionally, RSVP coordinates a volunteer network of seniors who use their skills and talents to provide support to community agencies and address community needs through service.
This year’s carnival and celebration begins Thursday, July 2 and continues through Sunday, July 5. The highlight of the event will be a spectacular pyrotechnic display which will be set to patriotic music. Set your radio dial to Magic 95.5 FM beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 for a live remote broadcast from the park, culminating with a musical accompaniment to the fireworks show at dusk in celebration of our nation’s independence. Carson City Toyota-Scion, the premier sponsor, has partnered with RSVP and Cumulus Media to provide the live radio remote.
Also featured on the 4th of July will be live music by Jake Armer and the Hot Dogs from 2 to 6 p.m. Local musicians and bands are encouraged to apply to play in the remaining openings scheduled for Friday, July 3, Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5. All types of music is encouraged but must be suitable for a family-friendly event and contain no offensive lyrics or stage show. A professional stage and sound system will be available. Additional local businesses are also needed to sponsor these bands.
Carnival wristband vouchers are already on sale at Carson City Toyota-Scion, 2590 S. Carson Street for just $20 each and are exchangeable for an all-day ride wristband good for any one day during the weekend. They are also available at Paradise Salon and Spa, 3430 Executive Point Way. Be sure to take advantage of this pre-sale as it means a $10 discount.
“All proceeds from the 4th of July special event go towards services for Carson City seniors. RSVP programs are designed to provide person centered care which assists elders to remain independent and in their own homes with dignity and to remain a part of the community. Programs include services such as escorted transportation, volunteer companions for homebound persons, homemaker services, pro-bono legal services, personal emergency response systems, free Farmer’s Market coupons and many more valuable services provided by dedicated volunteers,” said Susan Haas, Executive Director of RSVP.
“RSVP depends solely on contributions to its Fireworks Fund in order to pay for the beautiful pyrotechnic display everyone enjoys at our 4th of July Celebration. Individual donations are appreciated and sponsorships are still available. If you view the show each year and want to see the program continue, please support RSVP by making a donation. Proceeds from this fundraiser are used to provide programs of assistance to elder Nevadans in Carson City.”
