Community Spotlight: Junior program starts today at Carson Valley

Carson Valley Golf Club is holding its junior program Wednesdays and Fridays starting this week.

The first class is today and June 26 plus July 1 and 3. The second class is July 8 and 10 and July 15 and 17. The final class is July 29 and 31 and August 5 and 7. The classes are based on age and experience. The cost is $50 per session. Space is limited, so preregistration is required.

On Wednesdays, ages 5 to 10 will play from 1 to 1:50 p.m. and players 11-17 will play from 2 to 2:50 p.m. The schedule will be the same on Fridays except lunch will be served and participants will go out and play the course.

• Ken Smitreski shot a net 72 to win Flight A in the Tip, Tuck and Tuff format on June 21. In this format, the tees and cups are put in the toughest position possible.

Dan Essary was second with a 76 and Jack Sparman was third with a 78.

Phil Macken won Flight B with a 69, while Mike Davis was next at 76 and Gerhard Fikse was next at 78. Joe Morrison won Flight C with a 69, four shots better than Bruce Sanford. Frank Tisiot and Gary Carsten tied for third at 74. John Watson won Flight D with a 69, one shot better than Larry Lockwood and six shots better than Paul Finan.

Carmona quartet wins at Silver Oak

Joe Carmona, Bob Lewis, Alex Talmant and Mark Hanzlik shot a 114 to win the Silver Oak Senior Men’s Club cha-cha-cha event on June 16.

The team of Bruce Kozak, Tim Bloom. Ray Moore and Tim Ricketts were second at 115, Joe Paden, Doug Smeltzer, John Scoville and Tim Ricketts were third at 117, and Doug Mcgilvray, Pat Lantis, Wilbur Keating and Dennis Puccinelli were fourth at 119.

• Mary Luster recorded a score of 25.5 to win Flight 1 at the recent Silver Oak Women’s Club tournament on June 18. The format was center cut.

Crystal Jackson was second at 27.5 followed by Teri Paden at 28 and Priscilla Kramer at 30.5. Nancy Mortensen won Flight 2 with a 28.5 followed by Margaret Konieczny at 29, Sue Farcello and Tina Luce at 33.

Lukens, Westfall win at Thunder Canyon

Cheryl Lukens and Shirley Westfall carded a 123 to win the two-day Thunder Canyon member-member tournament on June 19-20.

Joyce Powell and Donna Schellin also shot a 123 and finished second. Joni Taylor and Cindy Hannah tied for third with Shelly Brewster-Meredith and Alaina McDonald. Both teams shot 125.

In the cross-country steeplechase, Cathy Weise and Aleta Durney won with a 14.2, Westfall and Lukens were next at 15.2 and Susan Hood and Claudia Goodnight were next at 15.4.

Tough Sunday for WildCats

The WildCats 18 and under squad went 1-2 in three summer tournament games at Golden Eagle Regional Park on June 14.

The WildCats lost 9-7 to the Hot Shots, beat the Nevada Lightning 6-2 and lost 9-7 to the Nevada Comets.

Kayla Buckmaster picked up the win in the circle for the WildCats, scattering 10 hits and striking out two. Bailey Henderson, Taylor Caulk and Kelsie Callahan all homered in the victory.

In the loss to the Hot Shots, Paige Thorn had two hits and two RBI and Kaitlyn Jimmy drove in two runs.

Against the Comets, Buckmaster had three hits and three RBI, while Caulk and Callahan had two hits each.

District tournament starts tonight

The District 1 Little League All-Star Tournament starts today at Governors Field with opening ceremonies at 3 and games at 5:30 and 8.

Carson City’s 10-year-old team opens play today at 5:30 in the double-elimination event. The 11-year-old team opens play Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against the North Tahoe-Reno Continental winner. The Carson 12s play at 8 p.m. Thursday against Reno Continental.
