Work has begun on a project to replace and add drainage channels up Highway 50 from Carson Street up Spooner Road.
The work will extend about 4.5 miles to Tahoe Golf Club Drive and includes adding drainage channels for storm water flow. A total of more than 50 drainage channels will be rebuilt or added to the roadway to improve drainage and reduce erosion.
A spokesman said some of the systems were built when the highway was built more than 50 years ago.
NDOT officials say the work by MKD Construction began this month and would cost about $1.2 million.
It will cause single lane closures but NDOT officials say there will be only minimal travel delays on Highway 50. Work is to be completed this fall.
