Brews, Bikes and Bubbly in Carson City

Beer judging, tattoo and pin-up contests, food, live music and array of family-friendly activities will fill downtown Carson City this weekend for the Battle Born 1864 Brews, Bikes and Bubbly fundraiser.

“It’s going to be an awful lot of fun,” said Dana Lee Fruend, marketing director for Nevada Day, Inc. “The vibe is eclectic Carson City. It’s this little mix of old and new.”

The Friday and Saturday event, hosted by Nevada Day, Inc., is a fundraiser for the annual Nevada Day parade and celebration to recognize the state’s admission into the Union on Oct. 31, 1864.

“We’re really excited at Nevada Day, Inc., to be taking on these new events,” Fruend said. “These kinds of events are to help keep Nevada Day going. We’re taking care of business.”

The fundraiser will be held in conjunction with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office’s 12th annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Officers will compete in a variety of challenges on a course set up along Carson Street from Robinson to Musser, which will be closed during the events.

“This training improves the rider’s skills and promotes camaraderie between the officers and the general public who come to see this event,” said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

Practice will begin around noon Friday and run through 5 p.m. Opening ceremonies will begin 8 a.m. Saturday and run through 6 p.m. Awards will be presented around 7 p.m.

The public will also have a chance to join the action during the Extreme Scooter Challenge when participants will be allowed to ride their scooters (49cc) through the course. Entry fees for this event will be given to a local charity and will be limited to the first 10 riders who sign up.

Brews, Bikes and Bubbly will feature food vendors and activities during the same times.

Fruend said there will be something for everyone, including a mustache contest at 2 p.m. Saturday open to all genders and ages — with categories for painted or glued on ‘staches and “peach fuzz.”

“This event is designed for people to get really cheeky,” she said. “Everyone can totally get involved.”

Other contests will include tattoo and pin-up, craft brews and wine, along with an exhibition bout from the roller derby team Carson Victory Rollers.

Participants can meet actor Jack Waggon along with the Naughty Tea Mistresses of Nevada.

Live music Friday night will be provided by Mo Beach and Mojo Green will take the stage Saturday.

“It’s really a win-win,” Fruend said. “We’re bringing new events to downtown and it’s what is going to keep us going and improve Nevada Day.”
