Nevada Lieutenant Governor Mark Hutchinson is proposing a constitutional amendment allowing the governor and lieutenant governor to be jointly elected.

Hutchinson presented SJR 3 to the Senate Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections alongside former Gov. Robert List on Monday afternoon. The proposal would allow gubernatorial candidates to select a running mate as the lieutenant governor rather than a separate election for the office.

Hutchinson and List said the change was necessary in part because of past conflicts between governors and lieutenant governors from different parties.

Because the proposal seeks to amend the state constitution, it needs to be approved by the Legislature in 2017 and then be approved by voters during the following election cycle.
