Nevada Sen. Debbie Smith says she will return to the Senate in the first week of April.

Smith, D-Sparks, underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her brain just days after the start of the 2015 Legislature.

“Every day I’m feeling better and I’m excited to return to Carson City in April,” she said. “We have so much work left to do to truly make this the education session and I can’t wait to get back to work next month to help create new educational and economic opportunities for all Nevadans.”

Smith, 59, is a veteran lawmaker and member of Democratic leadership and regarded as one of the party’s experts on the budget and state finances. She chaired the Senate Finance Committee two years ago and was expected to return to a seat on that panel in April.

In her absence, Senate Minority Leader Aaron Ford has filled the finance seat.
