140 Years Ago

A spree. An engineer who runs the yard engine backed it into the round house, closing the dampers and left her all night. Before the night engineer came on, it is thought the Chinese man who was cleaning it must have opened the dampers. The locomotive got up steam, got her throttle open and waltzed out of the round house on her own hook, knocking the doors off the hinges and running herself into the turntable pit.

Rare fun. Tonight it is proposed to turn a greased pig loose at the skating rink and allow the skaters to catch it. Whoever catches the pig can take it home. A squad of pretty girls and gay young dudes and old rheumatic chaps on wheels, piling pell-mell after a greased big ought to be worth double the price of admission.

Wanted by Nevada Power M&M Co. at Bishop, 200 men: straight pick and shovel men, handling materials for wood and steel pipe line, power plant construction and transmission line work. Wages — straight labor $2.50 per day, men for mining work $3 a day; $6 to be deducted for room and board.

Passed away. Morris Cohn, a native of Prussia, passed away at the age of 86. He came to the United States when he was 14 years old and to Nevada in the year 1868. He had a dry goods store in Carson. He established the first creamery and was active in getting alfalfa growing in the valley. Surviving relatives are four daughters, Miss Felice Cohn, Mrs. Bertha Cohen, Miss Lillian Cohn and Mrs. Isle Bair and son Dr. Herbert Cohn ...
