Carson High’s Asa Carter is arguably the best returning football player in Northern Nevada, and for some inexplicable reason, he hasn’t attracted any scholarship attention from the hometown Nevada Wolf Pack, or any other D-1 school for that matter.
Carter was the Sierra League Player of the Year, and he also was a first-team regional and state selection. A ball-hawking safety, he finished with eight interceptions and averaged around eight tackles a contest. He was also dangerous as a pass receiver and running back from his wingback position.
I’ve covered high school football for many, many years, and Carter is more than capable of playing Division I football. He’s one of the best safeties I’ve seen because of his ability to play the run and pass.
And, now he’s asking for some help. Carter has been invited to the Nike football camp in Columbus, Ohio. The family is trying to raise $2,000 for airfare, hotel and car rental for the three-day trip for him and his mom.

The news has been all good recently around Carson High School.
Bob Bateman, athletic director, was named the top AD in the state. It’s a well deserved honor.
And, CHS will be hosting next year’s (2016) state track meet. It appears Carson High has a great chance to become the permanent state host whenever the meet is in Northern Nevada.
•••
And, while we’re on the subject of track, NIAA assistant commissioner Donnie Nelson said that by 2017 he hopes to have Carson be the yearly host for all four regional track meets.
At last, track people are realizing what I’ve been saying all along is Carson High has the best track facility in the entire state. Granted it means some extra travel for some schools, but the student-athletes deserve the best facility to show their abilities.
Nelson also said in 2017 the regional meets would be held on a state meet schedule.
Currently the large schools operate their regional on a two-week schedule. If Nelson makes this happen, that two-week format would finally go away.

Blair Roman, CHS football coach, said there’s a good chance that the Carson-Reed game scheduled for Aug. 28 could be played at Nevada’s Mackay Stadium.
I’m not sure I’d want to give up home field advantage, but CHS coaches think it would be great for the kids to play on a college field. Bateman said there also has been talk about getting two other teams to play an earlier game.
Why stop there? Why not have a full day of high school football at Mackay. Are you listening Brian Polian? You of all people should get behind this.
