Republicans are sponsoring a bill that would make background checks for gun sales free and prevent more people with mental illness from having a firearm.
SB240 was introduced in the Nevada Senate on Tuesday. It would expand the list of people prohibited from having a gun to include people who have pleaded guilty but mentally ill or have been acquitted of charges by reason of insanity.
The measure would allow the cost of a background check to be covered by the state general fund.
It also requires courts to transmit key information about a person’s competency to a background check database within five days.
The bill does not mandate private sellers to conduct a background check, unlike a measure expected to appear on the 2016 ballot.
