Members of Nevada’s congressional delegation have introduced legislation that would only allow a nuclear waste dump if the governor of the host state signs off on it.
Nevada Senators Dean Heller and Harry Reid unveiled the Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act on Tuesday. Reps. Joe Heck and Dina Titus introduced a similar bill in the house.
The measures would require the governor, local government and tribal officials to give the green light before a repository is placed in a given state.
The senators issued statements criticizing the proposed Yucca Mountain project and saying the federal government shouldn’t be able to force the development on Nevada or any other state.
