140 Years Ago

Hank Monk. Hank came and banged at the Appeal office door bawling for admittance. He was loaded down to the guards with a brace of bottles of “Krug” and a tray full of iced glasses. “Me and Mr. Lewis sends our compliments,” says Monk. “We made that champagne to duty in moistening a toast to the health, prosperous journey ... and safe return of our much beliked fellow townsman, Mr. H. R. Mighels. Good luck to ye, old fellow!”

An Adamless Eden. The troupe will perform at the Opera House. Composed of a collection of women with pretty faces and voluptuous figures, it is a leg show just as the handbills show. Pretty women in flesh-colored tights have proven an attraction for the past hundred years and will continue as long as there are calcium lights, pretty women and pink silk hosiery. C. W. Friend has an assortment of opera glasses to let, and there is no extra charge for bald headed men.

Then have ye seen the mining-camp

They’re building over yon!

T’was suddenly created there

Between the night and dawn ...

Yet when you see that mining-camp,

It’s blazed with empty bottles and

With signs of fierce travail).

Regard the homes — the garden sports —

Where men of strength, with woman’s aid

Nevada Day. U. S. Senator Richard Bryan has been selected as Nevada Day Grand Marshal with the first official three-day Nevada Day celebration. This year’s theme will be “Pioneering into the Millennium.”
