The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Helaine Jesse Morres and all those involved in saving the Western Nevada College baseball and softball programs. WNC announced plans to disband the programs after the 2016 season.
But Morres and supporters have established the Athletics Foundation of Western Nevada, with its main purpose being to save the programs. It’s an effort close to Morres’ heart, who led the effort to establish athletics at WNC, beginning in 2002. Although Morres must feel like the Godfather as she’s essentially renewing the effort she began 13 years ago. “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in,” is what Morres must be thinking.

SILVER DOLLAR: On another note concerning WNC athletics, congratulations to Wildcat baseball coach D.J. Whittemore for picking up his 400th win with the program.
SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in the effort to make a Northern Nevada Veterans Home a reality. After a long struggle, it looks like the home may actually be coming closer to becoming a reality.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson Futbol Club’s U-15 boys soccer team for winning the Northern California Spring Showcase.
WOODEN NICKEL: To the countless area scam artists who continue to feast on Northern Nevada’s residents. IRS tax scams, the grandparent scam, Publisher’s Clearing House scams, etc. they are all going around and will continue to circulate. Reminder: Don’t hand out any banking, personal or any other personal information over the phone. Always be suspicious: Ask questions of the callers and always get a name, company identification number and phone number of the person who are talking to. And lastly, if it seems to good to be true, it likely is.
