Local sports roundup: Carson bowlers take crown

Carson High’s bowling team knocked off Reed, 39-6, to win the HDIBP championship.

The championship match was bowled in a bakers format, meaning three people per team.

The group of Tyler Lethcoe, Matt Liddell and Matt Hinton combined for games of 170, 253, 139, 171, 166 and 174. Conlin Herrick, Skylar Belcher and Dustin Floyd rolled games of 197, 172, 268, 245, 206 and 217. Alec Fletcher, Brett Paulson and Chris Baird rolled a 202, 161, 187, 193, 216 and 192. Samantha Hinton, Dominic Cerniglia and Paxton Spence had games of 204, 191 and 165. Paulson, Ray Ceragoli and Nicko Chotisin rolled 191, 189 and 192.

Floyd was named Bowler of the Year, Lethcoe had the regional high series of 735, Herrick finished with an average of 207 and Belcher had a high game of 299. Paulson and Hinton were named to the regional all-star team.

The team was coached by Kevin Costa, Dave Lethcoe, Chris Fletcher and Vern Barnes.

Galena’s Barry no-hits

Douglas, 11-0

MINDEN — Nate Barry started well on the mound for the Galena High baseball team and only got stronger along the way on Tuesday when he pitched a no-hitter to blank Douglas 11-0 during the Northern Division I conference contest.

Barry retired 18 of the 20 batters he faced at Tiger Field during a game shortened to six innings due to the 10-run rule. The senior left-hander finished strong by striking out seven of the last eight batters he faced. He had 11 strikeouts and only one walk overall as Galena (4-0 conference, 7-1 overall) remained tied for first-place.

“He was unhittable,” first-year Galena coach Dave Kulikowski said of Barry, who threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of 20 batters. “He got ahead of guys and made his pitches against everybody. I was really proud of him.”

Douglas coach John Glover described the performance by Barry as impressive. Just consider the Tigers had 11 hits and only struck out four times Saturday in a 14-9 loss at Galena.

“That outing was spectacular,” Glover said. “He was throwing three pitches for strikes and his location was great. We knew that coming in, he was just unbelievable.”

The no-hitter was the first for Barry, a first-team all-region pitcher for the Grizzlies in 2014. Barry only needed 78 pitches to finish his gem.

“My energy got bigger and bigger as the game went on,” Barry said. “Then when we scored those runs in the sixth, I wanted to finish it.”

Galena put the game away by scoring four runs in the fourth inning and four more runs in the sixth.

Carson’s Sosa excels

at Aqua 5 event

Blanca Sosa took a first, third and sixth at last weekend’s nonscoring Aqua 5 meet at Carson Aquatic Center.

Sosa won the 50 free in 26.32, took third in the 100 free in 58.34, was fourth in the 100 back in 1:07.03 and sixth in the 100 breast in 1:20.30.

Nicole Van Geel was fourth in the 100 fly in 1:06.81 and took fifth in the 50 free in 26.77. Christy Krahn was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.64, Morgan Nelson was sixth in the 100 free in 1:00.93 and Ashley Meyer was sixth in the 100 fly in 1:10.91.

On the boys side, Brett Kolb was third in the 100 free in 55.09 and fifth in the 50 free in 25.33. Bryan Remick was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.92 and sixth in the 100 free in 57.11.

PREP SOFTBALL

Dayton girls start 0-3

against S. Creek

DAYTON — The Dust Devils started the season 0-3 after being swept by Spring Creek last weekend.

The Spartans won 22-1, 26-4 and 20-0.

Hannah Stevenson scored twice in the series, while Mallory Dickenson and Ashley Morrison each scored once.
