Infernal machine. Sheriff Nash was clearing away some rubbish in the rear of the court house and picked up a sheet iron box. He took it into the office. Curiosity induced Ed Rinkel to open it with a jack knife. The box contained gunpowder and three percussion caps. If placed on any hard substance, it would explode. One of the prisoners awaiting trial in jail explained that they are used on railroads as signals of danger when it is not convenient to keep a red flag or red light. It is a wonder the school children playing near the courthouse did not find the box and get their fingers burned (Silver State).
