140 Years Ago

Huffaker Station. This place is the most active and lively in Washoe County. One hundred men are at work on the wood flume of Mackey and Fair. This flume is to be 11 miles long and run from Huffaker’s ranch at the railroad to the head of Hunter’s creek. There is now at Huffaker’s 400,000 feet of assorted lumber, which is just being worked up for the construction of the flume. It will tap the heaviest body of timber cast of Lake Tahoe and will take many years to consume it (Reno Journal).

Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain’s new book, “Huckleberry Finn,” is an interesting volume and profusely illustrated. The opening paragraph: “That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth mainly. There were things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth ... I never seen anybody but lied, one time or other ...”

Brain fever (inflammation of the brain). Will Wilson was taken to his mother’s home, and it was believed he was improving when he took a relapse. His physician think he shows a chance of recovery.
