Local sports roundup: Carson City’s WNC softball sweeps doubleheader

A one-hit shutout by freshman pitcher Kristina George and a three-run homer by Lauren Lesniak carried Western Nevada College to a dominant 7-0 victory over Snow College in the first game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday at Edmonds Sports Complex.

George also picked up the victory in game two, relieving Nicole Lesniak with WNC trailing in the fifth, as the Wildcats rallied with some aggressive base running for a 5-4 win over the Badgers of Ephraim, Utah.

The wins enabled WNC to raise its conference and overall records above .500 for the first time ever this late in the season. The Wildcats are 13-12 overall and 8-7 in the SWAC, only one-half game behind third-place College of Southern Nevada. The teams meet Friday and Saturday in Henderson with third place on the line.

George was trying to become the first pitcher in program history to throw a no-hitter. She was unaware of taking a no-no into the final inning.

With her team struggling to deliver a clutch hit with two outs in the first two innings, Lauren Lesniak belted a pitch from Riley Cox for a three-run homer.

Lesniak was a tough out for the Badgers. She was 4 for 4 with two extra-base hits and four RBI.

In the nightcap, Makaylee Jaussi collected three of them and drove in two of the Wildcats’ five runs.

PREP SOFTBALL

Reno sweeps Carson

RENO — The Huskies swept a twin-bill from Carson, winning 10-0 and 12-0, on Saturday.

Carson falls to 1-5 in league play. Carson had just eight varsity players and one JV player suited up for the doubleheader.

In the opener, Carson was held to just three hits, two by Bailey Allen and one by Sarah Runge.

Carson managed just four hits in the second game, one each by Allen, Runge, Nicole Brown and Terryn Earle.

Dayton swept by Fernley

DAYTON — The Dust Devils continue to struggle in all areas, as Fernley walked a way with a three-game sweep over the weekend.

Fernley won 20-0 on Friday, and swept Saturday’s doubleheader, 22-0 and 20-0.

Tigers take 2 from Galena

RENO —The Douglas High softball team swept a Northern Division I doubleheader Saturday at Galena, 15-5 and 9-8.

Douglas took a 9-0 lead in the opening three innings and never looked back in the first game.

In the second game, the Tigers scored four runs in the first and added four more runs in the third to take an 8-1 lead. Galena answered with five runs in the fourth and added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh before Douglas closed the game out.

Fernley sweeps Dust Devils

DAYTON — The Dust Devils managed just five hits in losing 12-2 and 16-4. The first game went six and the second game was stopped after five.

In the opener, Fernley broke open a 3-2 game with five in the fifth and four in the sixth. Shane Kelso threw a no-hitter for the Vaqueros.

In the nightcap, Gage Duke, Jaret Reed, Trevor Burrows, Mike Selmi and D.J. Baker all hit safely in the losing effort.

Miners pound Tigers

MINDEN — Bishop Manogue scored seven runs in the fourth to take charge in its to a 15-4 win Northern Division I win at Tiger Field.

Douglas (0-6 conference, 2-9 overall) took a 4-0 lead in the first, only to see Manogue (6-0, 9-3) come back.

Douglas pushed across four runs in the bottom half of the first. Tomas Leitenbauer led off with a sharp ground ball single to left. Cale Kynett followed with a ground ball single to right and Kaleb Foster reached base on an error to load the bases. Zach Davies and Haydn Brown both drove one run home with singles, Logan Fencl was hit by a pitch to bring another run home and Spencer Trivitt’s ground ball out to third brought another run to make it 4-0.

Preston, Reid shine

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Madi Preston and Corey Reid set meet records on Saturday at the Husky Invitational.

Preston set a meet and school record when she soared to 5-7 to win the high jump. She was third in the triple jump at 36 feet and fourth in the long jump at 16-8.

Reid ran a 48.23 to win the 400 and set a meet record. He also won the 110 hurdles in 15.43. Reid also ran a leg on the 1600-meter relay.

Asa Carter finished third in the triple jump at 43-8 1/2. Aaron Woodbury was eighth at 42 feet. Ian Schulz threw 152-4 to place second in the discus.

Eveline Delgado was fifth in the 3200 at 12:15.51.

• At the Northwest Invitational, Greg Wallace high-jumped 6-5 to win easily at McQueen.

On the girls side, Athena Favero was second in the 300 hurdles at 48.21 and the 800 relay group of ValerieSue Meyer, Favero, Sahara Winder and Hailey Palotas finished second in 1:47.36.

Dayton fares well at Yerington

YERINGTON — The Dayton boys won and the girls finished second at the annual 20/30 Yerington Relays Saturday at Yerington High School.

The Dayton boys finished with 170 points, 56 better than Fernley. Lowry outscored Dayton 167-137 for the girls title.

Benji Ply (30), Jon Ply (27), Brady Huesser (16), Tobias Tapley (16) and Zach Hawley (20) combined for 109 points.

Benji Ply won the 110 hurdles (16.28), the pole vault (13-0) and the high jump (6-4). The latter was determined by fewer misses. Jon Ply was second in the 110 hurdles (16.53), second in the 300 hurdles (44.20), third in the high jump (6-4) and fourth in the pole vault. Huesser won the 1600 (4:46.93) and was third in the 3200 (11:01.49). Hawley won the shot (56-1) and the discus (159-2). Tapley was second to Fernley’s Devin Archer in the 100 (11.75) and the 200 (23.93). Dallon Mendoza won the 400 in 52.07. Mendoza, Wesley Wright, Tapley and Skyler Berntson won the 800 relay in 1:34.89. Benji Ply, Tapley, Berntson and Mendoza won the 1600 relay in 3:31.55.

The girls had two individual winners — Kaylee Turner and Cheyanne Strong.

Turner won the shot (36-10) and the discus (122-11). Strong won the long jump at 14-9. She was also fifth in the 300 hurdles at 56.28 and seventh in the 100 hurdles in 19.52. The Dust Devils’ 3200 relay team of Magaly Gonzalez, Zaria Landis, Rachel Hadley and Sydney Strickler won in 10:59.06. The 800 relay of Jessie Ingham, Rebecca Mason, Macie Callan and Ashley Mason were second in 1:54.55. The Masons teamed with Strickler and Ingham for second in the 400 relay with a 53.68. Ingham was second in the 200 (28.81) and Ashley Mason was third (28.86). Rebecca Mason was third in the high jump at 4-8. Landis took fourth in the 1600 (6:02.83) and Hadley was fourth in the 800 (2:42.67).

SWIMMING

Carson splits with Reed

Despite two wins by Tallon Rauch, Reed swam past Carson, 56-51, Saturday afternoon.

Rauch won the 100 fly (57.58) and the 100 back (1:01.33). Dylan Popoff won the 100 free in 59.02 and Dagen Kipling took the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.71.

The CHS girls won 76-40 over the Raiders despite not having a single individual event winner.

Kaly Branco was second in the 500 free (6:10.69) and third in the 200 free (2:18.12). Blanca Sosa was second in the 100 back (1:07.31) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:29.82).
